And there's a pretty simple culprit:

MARC bought the wrong type of locomotives for the climate.

To my knowledge, nowhere else on earth are the HHP-8s exposed to high humidity and high temperatures like they are here.

If you have to work in DC and take MARC, all I can suggest is to take the Camden Line in during the summer.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26133282.post-63990307672495843932010-06-06T09:07:00.000-04:002010-06-06T09:09:03.015-04:00June 6, 1944...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 268px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmyj0-zWptqjF9T7X2AepoiazDy7JBp0TZwY78EsOkjo01NuPpiA_XMtR2ZVQZ0AcRBw9U7Iw_hXWhw9vJwntWpG4JEYNBxEBtWrt5FtmIlDEDtsxQEBYnMRR6fLuzqhflsY_p/s400/ikesmessage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479646861927426258" />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26133282.post-53964569935695087002010-06-05T23:01:00.002-04:002010-06-05T23:07:18.577-04:00Reading an economic history...So, I've been reading the new Pulitzer Price winner for History, "Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World." And I must say I am of two minds on this book.

First, the topic covered is very interesting. There's a great deal of international and inter-agency action going on that is going to lead to the Great Depression.

BUT

Second, it's written in a rather dense style.

I don't mean it's a dense book in the sense that it's dumb-ed down, but rather it reads more like a scholarly history or an annual report than other "popular" history books.

My problem right now is, I'm not sure if I like this book or not. I don't DISLIKE it, but I'm not reading right through it like other history books I own. This is a very frustrating position for me to be in. If I disliked the book, I'd stop and give up on it. (Note to authors, if you don't hook me by chapter 1, look for your work to show up at the used book sale at the local library.) But I'm having trouble getting through this. I'm reading bit by bit each night. But as other books show up, like the latest Clive Cussler novel, they go to the top of the pile and Lords of Finance goes down a spot.

Has anyone else had this issue with a book. It's not bad enough to stop reading, but you just don't have the drive to burn right through it?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26133282.post-28337130289929360302010-02-01T23:26:00.004-05:002010-02-01T23:35:01.571-05:00So, here's the lay of the land-er-room...<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkHwyTx3fwS28dKlnPZlqi9hzz_X73T0-WGQkNIHT1b9GsfQ5mlfwUzMRmZZrWDyH23r8egPgRd7cQaCDLGG5lFbgxdOdaWltXpncucCHfzmK7sfiR1dasHR9kfecQVdR-BJGD/s320/IMG_0452.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433499626485518866" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuosVaZlvYml9XIfwMJCot_lRdW7pvsxYNSdbKMp8THO4GTnKr3pgOWBn5BfdpkG178ma2sNbkNauO8ArZ4x1CXbCzPF7Jw6XlpWI794bs68w8meHFPOcvfQ12eeBDR04Sv0Nx/s320/IMG_0453.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5433499174495560418" />

Well, this is where the layout will be built. And I think I've found the perfect movie to relax to:

The Big Lebowski.

I don't know why, but that movie is a slow burn. I didn't laugh out loud the first time I watched it, but after I started reflecting on some lines like "OVER THE LINE!" and "I really liked that rug, it tied the whole room together." I started smiling.

It's just so absurd at times that I really stopped caring that there was no resolution for the Dude's rug and car. But that's the point. The Dude abides. He rolls with it.

So, if you haven't seen it check it out. If you have but didn't think it was funny, watch it again.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26133282.post-38379778595009944012009-03-17T19:56:00.001-04:002009-03-17T19:57:10.066-04:00Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Sorry, I've been rather busy so far this year. In 1862 the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia invaded Maryland under the mistaken assumption that the population would rise up in solidarity and kick out the garrison troops. To help enhance the mood of the population, Lee had his bands play this song as they marched across the Potomac, some regiments even sung they lyrics.

Of particular note is the last stanza:

I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland, My Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland, My Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

Basically it was cheer-leading for Maryland to join the Confederacy. While there was support among the eastern side of the state for this, the western side (aka where I grew up) wanted no part of that. The recruits didn't come and the population, while not violently opposed to the presence of the Confederate Army, did not greet them as liberators. This chilly reception was noted in several diaries and letters from the soldiers.

So, given that half of the state didn't care for the song, and as noted in the article, many of the legislators (let alone average citizens) don't know the words...

I say good for the 4th Graders, let's change the lyrics and move on.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26133282.post-44247617318960248572009-02-20T11:25:00.000-05:002009-02-20T11:26:16.598-05:00Ladies and Gentlemen....Mister Kenny Rogers:

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26133282.post-82059722063592216352009-02-07T11:08:00.001-05:002009-02-07T11:11:10.623-05:00Brooks Was Here...

James Whitmore, 1921-2009Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26133282.post-47139972638098634632009-02-06T15:07:00.002-05:002009-02-06T15:10:22.809-05:00I finally went and did it...I've been eyeing this DVD box set for months and waited until I got my Borders 30% off coupon to do it.
